The Different Types of Laptop Cases Explained

By: Zongora Zoli

As laptops nowadays are very common and practically everybody owns at least one lap top, laptop bags are a necessity to have as well.

You've just received a new laptop for your birthday and the bag it came with is a flimsy thin material that you know will tear apart in a few weeks. So you've started researching the various laptop bags online but you're a bit confused as there are so many different types and models and materials used that choosing the best one for your budget and preferences is not quite so easy as it first seemed to be.

For instance, you know that you want a leather computer bag, but which type? You can find, for example, laptop briefcases, backpacks and also slim portfolios. While you recognize that each of these offers the main functionality, they do differ not only in price but in additional options available. This is where this article will help you decide which one to go for.

The laptop briefcase is one of the more professional style of laptop cases. When you open it you will see that it has plenty of space for a laptop, its power cable and a few other tidbits such as office supplies and a battery. You can find it not only in leather but also in vinyl. If you ask me, however, leather is much more durable and will last you a very long time. Usually the laptop briefcase has a shoulder strap that makes it easier to carry your laptop around.

The laptop backpack, is more comfortable and less sophisticated looking. It screams more of 'young' and strongly reminds one of the good old days of school and college. You'd be surprised though how many big managers are using their backpacks to carry their laptops to work and travel. The backpack holds the laptop and has also an additional pocket that allows you to add extra relevant stuff in it, including any office supplies, notepad, extra battery and even your lunch. In addition it has small front pockets that give you additional storage options. You can also find it as a leather computer backpack and it also comes in other materials. Again, leather seems to be the better choice due to the increased durability and stress handling that it offers.

Finally the slim portfolio is designed for a particular laptop type, so you can't just buy a one size fits all bag. It has the advantage of it being really thin so it's easier to carry and it's less bulky than the other laptop bag types. The same advantage, however, is also its shortcoming as it has really limited space for extra storage. Some people found that their laptop finish got damaged due to the zippered closure that this type of bag has. Most probably this is the type that your laptop first came in and this is why you want to change it to something more durable, permanent and elegant.
