Information Technology - Understanding IT and its Uses

Information Technology is the study of and the complete development, support and managing of computer information systems.

Information technology is all about using computer hardware and application software to store, secure, handle manage, retrieve and disseminate information.
The way in which people connect with information technology can be explained under the following four categories.

IT allows individuals to perform efficiently and independently.
Some of these information technologies are generic programs, and a good example is the word processing software for example Microsoft word or the spreadsheet for example the Excel spreadsheet. Some other examples are specialized applications for accountants, graphic designers, CAD (computer aided design) application software for engineers. Applications of this kind can be adapted for individual use in the office or at home.

IT enables staff within and outside an organization to interact effectively and quickly.
Technologies that allow members of staff to interact with one another are network technologies. A very good example is electronic mail. Some other examples are wiki, mashups, IM systems and so on. Present-day network technologies in the office improve continuous communication, association and exchange of ideas.

IT make available management capabilities that augment decision making process in the place of work.
Information technologies that help manage businesses are mostly called Management Information Systems (MIS). These systems process and produce important information and reports and generally augment output. A few examples are health information management systems, Geography management systems and Educational information management systems.

IT offers enterprise applications that encompass and specify transactional processes for large organizations.
Information technology systems that organize the business processes of an entire establishment and the way it communicates with clients and associates are known as enterprise application software. These types of technologies are commonly used by large companies to organize the entire venture. A major example of such IT is supply chain management (SCM). Software in this category consist of technologies that direct, handle and implement supply chain transaction processes and also associations.

Information technology combines the power of communication technology and computer systems to produce immense benefits to the world.
