How to sell on eBay - Test, test and test again

By: Dave Articlesubmit

There are numerous books on how to sell items on eBay. They will tell you the best day to start an auction, when to finish it, how to write your listing and how to prepare your photographs. The problem is that all of these books give you differing instructions.
The truth is that whilst these books offer you some excellent general advice eBay is not a static beast and it is moving on all the time. What works this month may not work next. Therefore, it is important that you test all the possible variables for yourself.
The important factor about testing any part of you listing is that you should only test on aspect at a time. For instance if you are testing a new title do not make any changes to the listing content or shipping terms at the same time.
One of the most important tools for testing is the free hit counter provided by eBay. As an example if you are testing two different Titles you could list your item twice using a different title for each. By checking the hit counter you can see which title is attracting the most people to your listing.
Then having selected your best title carry out the same process with your description. Test two different descriptions to see which makes the biggest number of sales. There can only really only be one yardstick for testing your description and that is which one sells the most. Of course you can also test different items within your description such as which photograph gets the best results or which colour scheme gets the best results.
No matter how successful you become testing should be an on-going and continual process. You need to always be striving to improve the response to all your listings. Another good point about testing is that it forces you to keep records of the number of hits and the number of sales that your listings achieve. It is surprising how few eBay sellers actually do this and in fact seem to adopt a hit or miss attitude with their listings.
By adopting a professional approach to listing your items on eBay and carrying out continual testing of all aspects of your listing you should see a remarkable improvement in your sales. There is a lot of competition out there at the moment and it will only be the best that profit, by carrying our regular testing you can ensure that you become one of the best.
