Have you ever gone to get your horse, only to have him snub you and walk (or even run) from you? It is a little disheartening, not to mention time consuming. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go out to the pasture, call your horse and have him come running (or at least walking) to you? First of all, I have been taught that there is a little bit of "horse language" that you must know when you approach a horse. Since the horse is a prey animal, he has prey animal instincts. Since a predator goes for the throat of its prey, if you walk toward your horse's head and neck when you approach him, your horse may think of you as a predator. Thus, this might be one of the reasons your horse is walking or running from you. So, instead of going for my horse's head, I approach her from the side, nonaggressively, and without direct eye contact. This is not threatening and gives my horse assurance to come to me. Another thing I do to encourage my horse to come to me is bring a treat with me. It can be a a store-bought horse treat, a carrot, or even a little bit of grain. If your horse thinks that there may be a yummy mouthful waiting for him, he is more likely to want to come to you...By the way, when you reach your horse, do not give him the treat until you put the lead rope around his neck and make sure you have him. Otherwise, when he finishes the treat, he may decide to leave. Also, put the treat on the ground or in a bucket - Do not feed him from your hand.
